Des 22: World Building

As the latest iteration of WMDYTL? students can take part in a (optional) workshop with Maki Suzuki from Åbäke, to create an exhibition to take place during the International Design Culture Confernce (IDCC) at SNU on October 27th and 28th.

WMDYWTL? is “is about mirroring and duplication, from reality to fiction, and from fiction to reality. The exhibition displays … works of art and artefacts that play with events both real and fictional, and demonstrates how our reality consists of multiple realities.” WMDYWTL? was initiated by åbäke, Sofie Dederen, and Radim Peško. After Maki's lecture at IDCC, the audience will head to the show as part of the event.

In the workshop / show, student groups will be paired with practicing designers around Seoul to discuss topics of fiction, alternate reality, unrealized design works, and world building. Based on these conversations, students will create audio works meant for specific locations in Seoul, and physical “fragments” related to the stories they have collected.

More info from Maki:

The audio and the objects are based on a three part workshop.

1/ the interview by students of professionals about their practices and more specifically how art and design provide an alternative reality to our existing one. The interview itself should be broad and be directed towards the interests of the interviewer and the interviewee. The WMDYWTL? project can provide a vague context as to what we mean by alternative realities (a poster for an event that didn't or won't happen, an object that is made following an industrial process except one crucial step, an object existing in a different medium such as a novel made real etc.). If it helps the students they can choose one project from the show

2/ the creation of a narrative and an audio (in Korean and English)

3/ the creation of an object that “proves” the story in the audio.
